One of Sri Lanka’s most dynamic and fast growing healthcare companies – MARKSS HLC recently sponsored the Annual Special Medical Camp organized by the Old Girls Association of Devi Balika Vidyalaya. A special feature of this Medical Camp was that it was conducted by Consultants and Doctors who were old girls of the school for the present and retired teachers of the school.
Fifty doctors and 200 teachers participated in this unique camp. Cardio, diabetic, optic, ENT and dental problems of the teachers were examined together with other medical problems. In addition laboratory, optical and dental clinic facilities were also accorded at the camp.
“Every year more than 50 of Devi Balika students qualify for the medical faculty. Because of this we have a lot of consultants and doctors who were old girls of our school. We conduct this medical camp annually so that we could pay back a little to our teachers who were instrumental in getting us where we are” stated Dr. Shanthi Gunawardena, Nutritionist attached to the Nutrition Unit of the Department of Health and Chairperson of the Devi Balika Old Girls Association.
She also stated that although these teachers are quite capable of paying for these services, this service is one that is very emotional since they are being treated and cared for by their students whom they taught and they are also proud of the achievements of these doctors.
“This annual medical camp by the old girls of Devi Balika Vidyalaya is a very special event. To be cared for and examined by your very own students provokes sentiments in a very special manner. It is because of this factor that Markss HLC decided to sponsor this annual medical camp as one of the events in our Corporate Social Responsibility calendar” said Dr. S. Mahakalanda, Medical Director of MARKSS HLC.
Among the doctors who attended this Medical Camp were Dr. Padma Guneratne, Consultant of the Neurology Unit, ENT Specialist Dr. Chandra Jayasuriya, Consultant Gynecologist Dr. Janaki Karunasinghe and Dr. Gunendrika Kasturiratne, Orthopedic Consultant. Kalyani de Soysa, Vice Principal of the Devi Balika Vidyalaya also participated in this event.
