he setting up of a fund called the ‘Uruma Aruna Conservaation Fund’ to maintain buildings of historical value was announced by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his Budget Speech last week. Rs. 100 million is to be set apart for the Fund. “We need to preserve our ancient buildings, furniture and equipment,” he said. He named a few buildings in the outstations and identified the GPO and Mumtaz Mahal in Colombo as heritage buildings that should be preserved.
