Dessert Rose is the latest little baking business that’s making a big splash in Colombo’s social circles. From birthday parties to weddings to book launches to milestone celebrations in the office this little home-run business has started to earn a name for its mouth-watering and eye-pleasing cakes and desserts. “I’ve always had a passion for making beautiful creations that are just as good to eat,” said Anju, the home baker responsible for Dessert Rose. “I started making themed birthday cakes and desserts for friends more as a hobby than anything else but soon I was getting requests from my friends’ friends and so on. So about two years ago I decided to start Dessert Rose as a business,” she explained.    Today Anju has a small staff helping her to keep up with the demand for her hand-crafted delicacies. “I’ve done a few weddings and recently a book launch,” she said talking about some of her larger orders. “But I supervise each and every item as it is prepared in my own kitchen because to me it is important that there is no drop in quality and that my customers get food that has all the goodness of a home crafted treat.” Coming from a family of very creative people Anju spares no pains for her creations. “Some of the requests I get for birthday cakes are unusual – like a Mushu dragon cake from the Disney movie Mulan,” Anju said. “Others like the Little Mermaid and the jungle themed cake take a lot of time to plan and create but I get a real sense of satisfaction when the job is done.” “Recently I was asked to make yaka cupcakes for a book launch,” Anju said. “This was a rather ambitious and detailed design so it took a lot of time to do each one but for me the end result was worth it.” “The hottest items on my menu are the sticky date pudding and the chocolate ganache,” Anju said as she talked about her day-to-day business. “With Christmas around the corner I’m now getting orders for Yule log, Christmas cupcakes, brownies, caramel squares, butterscotch toffees and of course Christmas cake – and they’re all made to hand-me-down home recipes which are kept top secret!” she said with a mischievous smile.
