Capturing fashion

As part of British Council’s Young Creative Entrepreneur Programme, a three-day workshop in fashion photography will be organised by the British Council on 25, 26, 27 March.

The workshop will be held at British Council Colombo and will be conducted by Sandun De Silva, the official photographer for the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week 2011. Sandun discovered photography quite late in life and is mostly self-taught. While his interest in creative work began with a stint in advertising at J. Walter Thompson which was followed by the Associate Editor role for The Leisure Times Magazine, he thereafter worked as a Cordon Bleu Chef till he discovered the wonders of photography.

Since then, Sandun has undertaken photo shoots for a number of reputed clients both in Sri Lanka and overseas. In November 2010, he was shortlisted for the British Council’s Young Fashion Entrepreneur (YFE) award.

Nonita Kalra, Editor-In-Chief of Elle magazine India will contribute to this workshop on the last day, 27 March. She will provide a broad overview of the Indian fashion industry, emerging designers, creation of portfolios, and insight into how they pick the photos to enhance Elle magazine’s reputation.

The workshops will be held from 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on all three days and will cover the following topics in Fashion Photography: “Theory and Ethics”, “Practical work”, and “Post-production and Finishing”.

After the workshops, an exhibition will be held to showcase selected works by the workshop participants. Nonita Kalra will choose and announce the best work produced during the workshop. The exhibition, which will be held at the British Council, will be open to the public on 30 and 31 March.

 Participants interested in taking part in the workshop must have a genuine interest in fashion photography and should have access to a DSLR camera and experience in handling one.
