The production that has built a reputation for fusing a myriad of art forms on the catwalk, ArtWalk is back once again this year to provide the best in artistic production. Following the theme of ‘free space’ this year, ArtWalk over the years has used fashion as a medium to communicate diverse creative expression to the public. Photography, sculpture, dance, painting, fashion and graphic design, amongst others, will all be used to address some of the pertinent issues currently faced in Sri Lanka.
Every year ArtWalk, from a production perspective, grows considerably and this year’s instalment will be no exception, aiming to push boundaries and to offer our audience some hard food for thought to chew on. ArtWalk 2011 will pay homage to the concept of ‘Free Space’ and the fluidity of being able to transport voyeurs to another place and the ‘vehicle’ of choice for ArtWalk, will be the artist/participant’s work.
There is an imperative distinction between offering a space and offering a truly ‘free’ space that allows up and coming artists, designers, entrepreneurs and models to express themselves to their contemporaries, supporters and critiques. The reach of ArtWalk is vast and non-discriminating, it always hopes to encourage and inspire as many people as possible. There are general themes that run through all of the productions, such as freedom of expression, empathy, appreciation, acceptance, innovation and teamwork.
ArtWalk 2011 will highlight the excitement and talent that is invoked and subsequently drawn out, by offering participants a safe and non-judgmental platform to present their work. Following suit from previous years, the concept will be reflected and explored through all avenues and angles of the production, including the venue and the pieces that the participants display on the ramp.
Looking to do things a bit differently this year, ArtWalk is set to change the tune of the upcoming Jazz Sunday at the CR&FC with an explosion of prizes, surprises and quite obviously, art. The first installation of this year’s edition of the show and its theme of Free Space will be presented to the public on 7 August at Jazz Sunday.
Along with the unveiling of the concept around which this year’s show will revolve, the Art Walk team will be giving the crowd an experience that’ll surely keep them thirsting for more. Not only will there be exciting offers and promotions but in true Art Walk-style, this event will have more than one interesting spin to it. One of the integral parts of the ArtWalk experience is to open your mind to creative expression and think miles out of the box. To get you warmed up for the winding journey the final production is likely to take you on, two pieces of interactive art will be on display at the event, an opportunity for you to contribute to the cause of creativity and possibly find within you the artist you never knew existed.
