The launch and book signing of ‘A Dumping Ground,’ the debut poetry and art collection by Vasika Udurawane, was held on 19 January from 6 p.m. onwards at The Sooriya Village, Colombo 5 to a small crowd of the author’s friends, family, and well-wishers.
The chief speaker for the evening was actress and academic Michelle Herft, who is also Vasika’s school English teacher, with a surprise appearance and speech by Malinda Seneviratne on the state of poetry and writing in the Sri Lankan literary scene.
The author spoke at length about his own work, specifically calling the event anticlimactic for the size of the book, as it was in fact a slim volume of work, especially speaking about self-publication, editing, and the stress of putting out a book by oneself.
