Sri Lankan film “The Newspaper” directed by Sartah Kothalawala and Kumara Thirimadura, was screened in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a part of the “Ambassador’s Choice: Film Festival” organised by the Embassy of India, partnering with several resident Missions including the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh recently.
The film won the best actors award at the 18th Kazan International Film Awards which was held in Russia.
Before the screening of the movie, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia P.M. Amza gave a short introduction on Sri Lanka’s film industry.
The Ambassador stated that the history of film industry dates back to the year 1925, when the first Sri Lankan Silent movie “Rajakeeya Vikramaya” was screened.
The festival screens 15 selected movies of diverse genres, which include many acclaimed and renowned movies such as Shams Al-Ma’arif from Saudi Arabia, Bareilly Ki Barfi from India, CODA from USA, The Sapphires (2012) from Australia and Mexican film Frida.
This event was attended by several members of the diplomatic corps, Saudi nationals, members of the Sri Lankan community and expatriates based in Saudi Arabia.
