A dance extravaganza titled ‘Resurrection’ took centre stage at the Bishops College auditorium on 26 and 27 August. The performance was choreographed and presented by Naomi Rajaratnam, famed for her ‘With my feet’ productions that have taken Colombo by storm since it first opened in 2000.
Naomi’s experience in the dance sphere is legendary, well versed in the genres of classical ballet, ballroom, and Latin American. Her students have gone on to represent Sri Lanka at international competitions, never disappointing to bring home gold. After a lapse of nearly 10 years, Resurrection brought Naomi back to the national dance circuit and the story behind the production gives a deeper connotation to the title of the production. Naomi’s passion for dance and life itself was encapsulated in each piece that Resurrection presented to its audience. Interestingly, a number of the Resurrection dancers were her former students, giving way to an awakening, or more aptly put, a resurrection, in their own personal journeys.
Resurrection showcased the genres of Latin American, Ballroom, hip-hop, fusion and contemporary styles; and further included pieces that incorporated jazz and bangra as well as Bollywood styles. As with any of Naomi’s previous productions, the standard of dance was set high, and there was deep anticipation among Colombo’s dance-enthusiasts to witness this Resurrection of talent and passion.
