COLIND (Colombo Indians) in association with ICF (Indian CEO Forum) announced that the much-awaited annual Diwali celebrations are all set for resumption. The Gala celebrations will take place on 19 November at the Grand Marquee, Taj Samudra.
The Festival of Lights- Diwali will be celebrated with gusto this year after a two-year hiatus forced by the pandemic. “We are delighted and eagerly await its resumption,” said Kishore Reddy, a key member of COLIND (Colombo Indians) organising committee, responsible for putting together this year’s event. “Since we are resuming after a forced hiatus, we want to put together a really memorable and exciting event that people in Colombo will remember and talk about for a long time,” he added.
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated across India with pomp and pageantry. It celebrates the victory of good over evil and is normally an occasion for families and communities to come together to celebrate. A typical Diwali celebration includes a game of cards, an array of gastronomic delights, people gathering in their best finery, and fireworks and lights and lamps being lit across homes and communities in India. It’s a 4–5-day affair and the whole country participates in one way or the other, depending on the cultural context of India’s various regions.
In Sri Lanka, COLIND plans to bring Diwali to Sri Lankans by offering some incredible Indian gastronomical delights- like Chowpatty Chaats, Nizam- e- hind Biryanis, Twisted Desserts and spicy, tangy street foods from across India like Pav Bhajjis and Bhathuras.
There will be special live action food counters offering mouth-watering Indian cuisine from all parts of India- distinct authentic flavours unique to the country. The program will be curated to create an experience of a typical Indian celebration with Bollywood music, energetic dancing and drums and other Indian music.
“We want the Diwali ball to be like ‘A Madigras experience’ in Colombo- an occasion full of colour, fun and excitement,” said Sumit Law, one of the organisers of the event. “We want Sri Lankans to flock in numbers to this event. We promise a high-quality sensorial event- titillate your taste buds, revel in the eye candy of glitzy glamour and reverberate to the music of Bollywood. Dance, enjoy, let your hair down and feel the authentic excitement of Diwali right here in Colombo,” said Santosh Menon, COLIND organising committee member.
