National policy to be introduced on school admissions: President

President Maithripala Sirisena says the Government is making arrangements to introduce a new national policy for the admissions of children to schools to prevent the parents going after politicians and government officers for the purpose of school admissions of their children. The President was speaking at the annual prize giving ceremony of Royal College last week. “The plans made by every government regarding the school admissions of the children have failed so far. Every government was criticised in that regard,” the President said. “If the parents have to fight for admitting their children into schools, it’s a matter that the authorities should draw full attention. The current government is making every commitment to provide every facility available in the schools considered as ‘popular schools’, to every school in the country,” he said. President Sirisena requested the school principals to provide required guidance and contribution to enhance the quality of the schools which are not competitive, to the level of the popular schools. The President presented the prizes for 35 students who have shown outstanding skills. He also presented award certificates to 18 teachers to commend their efficiency. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ministers Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Malik Samarawickrama, Gayantha Karunathillaka, Ravi Karunanayake, Rauff Hakeem, Deputy Minister Harsha de Silva, Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunathilake , Commandor of the Army Lieutenant General A.W.J.C. De Silva, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunarthne, Royal College Principal B.A. Abeyrathne and General Secretary of the Old Boys’ Association Athula Munasighe also participated in this event. –Pix by Shantha Ratnayake
