Treshan Weerasooriya Pereira
Treshan Weerasooriya Pereira is a young entrepreneur on a mission to make a name in the hospitality industry, reviving the legacy of his grandfather’s business which has now risen from ashes, with his efforts. Apart from his successful career as the Assistant Manager Cost Control at Qualitea Ceylon Ltd., Treshan reinvested with the support of his parents in Villa Birdlake in Hikkaduwa, his grandfather’s business that faded away with time without having anyone to look after. Treshan has now successfully revived the business with the vision to take it to greater heights by expanding it to a chain of villas in several parts of the island. Treshan admits, studying the CIMAMBA from University of West London (UWL) offered at ANC broadened his views, helped him think outside the box and helped him see opportunities that other people could not see – which in fact, added value to his career as well as life to progress. With this boost, Treshan who is just 27 years old, has already come a long way closer to seeing all his life dreams fulfilled. Below are excerpts from the interview with Treshan:
Q: Tell us a little about your work and your business venture?
A: As the Assistant Manager Cost Control at Qualitea Ceylon Ltd., I have indeed gained a lot of experience which has added value to the work I do. I am not far away from reaching the height of my career. I am happy about how far I have come in terms of my career and life. I also run Villa Birdlake, a private villa in Hikkaduwa which I started two and half years back. It was, in fact, a beautiful pocket of land which my grandfather turned into a very beautiful hotel about 35 years back. However, the business died down eventually as my grandfather (Hubert Weerasooriya) focused more on his career as a lawyer. I wanted to bring it back to life in a form of a villa. I gave it a grand oriental touch and the place serves authentic Sri Lankan food. Within a very short period, the business picked up. We are proud to say that all our customers enjoy their stay and leave with good words about the place and the service we deliver. I do admit that UWL CIMA-MBA offered at the ANC School of Postgraduate Education taught me how to get the best outcome of whatever I invest my time in. It gave me the boost I needed to drive this business towards success.
Q: What made you opt to follow an MBA on top of your CIMA qualification?
A: Well, the MBA offered at ANC is an internal MBA from the University of West London (UWL). Its quality and standards are undisputable. For instance, the UWL collaboration in the CIMA convocation indicates that CIMA Sri Lanka is also closely collaborated with a reputed University like UWL. They do not compromise their standards. By studying an MBA, primarily, I wanted to get more qualified. I wanted it to add more value to my CIMA qualification.
Q: Did this program deliverup to your expectation?
A: It, indeed, delivered what I had in mind – and more. As a person, I never think in a very mediocre way. I always think carefully in terms of what I can achieve. I have high expectations and I dream high. This MBA fell well in line with my expectations.
Q: How did this program addmore value to your CIMAqualification?
A: This MBA helped me learn how to handle people, how to market myself, and how to handle financial matters etc. After doing CIMA, this was actually a stage where I was able to smooth off the rough edges. CIMA was a basic qualification which of cause taught me a lot in terms of strategic thinking but after doing this MBA program I started seeing the world in a whole different perspective. The CIMAMBA gave me a very broad view of the world – and taught me to look outside the box, see things beyond what other people see.
Q: How would you describethe ANC CIMA-MBAcurriculum?
A: The curriculum was pretty good. The program covered many areas well above my expectation. Various components on HR, marketing, accounts, management etc have been well injected in to the program. I would say it’s a well compartmentalised program. On top of that, CIMA finalists are exempted from some MBA modules which were part of the CIMA curriculum. Our MBA curriculum included the areas we missed out in the CIMA curriculum – thus we did not have to repeat what we had already learnt.
Q: How do you describeyour learning experienceat ANC?
A: The faculty at ANC School of Postgraduate Education has wellqualified professionals with relevant industry exposure and experience. They are very committed to give students the best learning experience and have been supportive throughout the programme. In general, the staff at ANC is also very supportive and prompt in responding to students’ requirements. The program was also delivered in collaboration with the university, maintaining its standards. I have absolutely nothing to complain.
