CINEC the only maritime college that offers courses starting from seamen level up to Chief Engineer/Captain levels, who eventually branched out to meet the needs of other key industries such as engineering, aviation logistics and transportation and information technology (IT), has sealed its position as a premier non-state education institution in Sri Lanka by reaching the milestone of having an annual enrolment of over 20,000 local and foreign students, the largest enrolment in the country in private education. Whilst this speaks volumes of their credibility and the value of their degrees, CINEC has also been the recipient of many prestigious awards, being winner of the National Quality Award for four consecutive years as well as winning the Asia Pacific Award for World Class Excellence in Education in 2010 and 2012. Adopting best practices in education Speaking of the achievement of this proud milestone and the way forward for the Campus, CINEC Vice President Prof.
Nalaka Jayakody stated, “Increasing competition and demands for accountability means that the methods of how institutions of higher education operate need to evolve. For higher education to enact substantial and sustainable changes in efficiency and productivity a new way of thinking or paradigm that builds efficiency and a desire for continual learning must be integrated into institutional structures. We clearly understand this requirement and have always worked on identifying best practices that increase student satisfaction, continuously improving the quality and efficiency of our programs and their relevance to the respected industries that is backed by a panel of lecturers who are industry experts that have developed strategies in the best teaching methodologies to get results.” Transformation of students to be innovative entrepreneurs and thought leaders: We believe that an education campus need to drive innovation and leadership to empower students with the skills to push an idea through to implementation, develop an entrepreneurial mindset to experiment, take risks, explore new opportunities, tolerate failure and strive to overcome obstacles backed by industry knowledge. Therefore as one of the leading private education campuses in the country, providing this benefit for the greater good of our youth is a part of our DNA. As such, over the past several years, programs geared specifically toward innovation and entrepreneurship in Engineering, Logistics, Aviation and IT have been designed and taught to meet the demand of the future needs on the industry and business at large. Collaborations with the best When companies and educational institutes work in tandem to push the frontiers of knowledge, they become a powerful engine for innovation and economic growth. This is something we strongly foster at CINEC and have always worked on developing closer ties with industry to offer our students the right kind of internships that will drive value for both the student as well as the organisation. Going further, they have also formed collaborations with respected universities such as the University of Wolverhampton in the UK and the Dailian Maritime University in China – the largest maritime university in the world, to enhance opportunities and exposure for students to top ranked international degrees. This has resulted in CINEC being benchmarked today as amongst the best in the education industry for our industry related programs that foster innovation and entrepreneurship and is also endorsed by employers in both public and private organisations. All CINEC programs are also approved by UGC and Ministry of Higher Education.
This is something they are very proud of and these initiatives of adopting best practices, guiding students to be top business leaders and innovative entrepreneurs and building alliances with the best universities and organisations are what I believe is a key part of our success which has resulted in the kind of numbers we can project of 20,000 enrolments per year. “We will continue to render our services to our country and are proud to provide our expertise to other countries by developing our education system and inviting foreign students to study in Sri Lanka. At CINEC, we currently have students from India, Maldives, Seychelles and Nigeria. We intend to enhance this, and do our part helping Sri Lanka to be recognised as a leading education hub in Asia,” concluded Prof. Jayakody.
