SLIIT, recognised as Sri Lanka’s premier non-state university, in a pioneering effort is offering students the opportunity to pursue the science of living organisms and its practical application through the launch of a BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology.
Overall, SLIIT’s Faculty of Humanities and Sciences new BSc (Hons) Biotechnology offers the first ever solely local Bio degree to help students discover the fascinating world of biological and biomedical sciences and earn a degree presenting the flexibility to explore emerging trends in present higher education opening doors to a world of opportunities.

The BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology is a four-year, full-time course designed to groom young individuals who wish to pursue a career in biotechnology. Additionally, the program prepares students to enter the biotechnology industry – one of the world’s fastest growing top five industries.
The program is significantly distinguishable, developed and delivered by highly well-known and qualified professionals, esteemed in their respective academic fraternities, attached to SLIIT’s School of Biotechnology, under the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences. The faculty, including acclaimed scholars are drawn from all life science disciplines.
Further, upon completion, graduates can then avail themselves of the excellent career opportunities in biotechnology and related industries, as they aptly gain industrial experience through internship and research experience completing research projects. Moreover, students also have the opportunity to entrepreneurially pursue their own enterprise in biotechnology confident in having obtained superior theoretical knowledge and hands-on laboratory experience.
A noteworthy feature of the BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology program is student having access to SLIIT’s impressive science laboratories including the Biological Science Laboratory, Physical Science Laboratory, Tissue Culture Laboratory, Molecular Biology Laboratory and Greenhouse facilities. These sophisticated areas comprise of equipment with cutting-edge technology and chemicals for practical experiments and research.
Faculty infrastructure is on par with overseas acclaimed universities including state-of-the-art learning amenities, smart board and lecture capture facilities, a comprehensive library which contains relevant reading material including e-books, well-equipped research laboratories, IT laboratories, in addition to a comfortable and relaxed campus environment.
Entry eligibility for the BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology is passes in three subjects (biological science stream) at the GCE Advanced Level Examination Sri Lanka/London or equivalent in one and the same sitting together with a pass obtained at the Aptitude Test conducted by SLIIT.
Graduates who obtain the degree are valued across a wide range of career prospects such as scientists or managers in the medical laboratories, veterinary industry, pharmaceutical industry, biomedical engineering, agricultural industry, product manufacturing and production, nutritional biotechnology, bioinformatics, forensic investigations, bioterrorism and marine biotechnology.
