Dr. Mohan Lal Grero (MP – Colombo District), Founder of the Lyceum International Schools of Sri Lanka and former State Minister of Higher Education and Cultural Affairs, is due to launch his new book titled ‘The mismatch between the education system and the job market in Sri Lanka with special reference to soft skills’.
The launch will take place on Saturday, 2 February 2019 at the Lotus Hall, BMICH with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasooriya and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The book examines three main education systems in Sri Lanka vs. general education, university education as well as technical and vocational education and training. The author has carried out an extensive island-wide research covering all 25 districts in Sri Lanka and involving nearly 7,000 participants through questionnaires in order to get feedback from all segments of stakeholders. The interviews carried out with stakeholders also highlight the importance of soft skills in the current job market both locally and internationally as well.
The book offers on one hand, a comprehensive discussion of the strategic potential of our education system and on the other hand, the challenges faced by the job market in sourcing suitable personnel, which goes beyond the issues commonly addressed. Further the author has proposed possible important policy decisions that could be made and implemented to mitigate the problems identified, thus making this book an eye opener to anyone interested in this particular topic.
