In July 2018, the Government of India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) bestowed the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) University with an ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag, reinstating the position the academy holds as India’s most acclaimed university.

Attending the function held to celebrate the great occasion, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal Vice Chancellor Dr. H. Vinod Bhat stated: “Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal plans to start three new campuses in the next two years. One in Bengaluru, the second in Jamshedpur, and the third in Sri Lanka.”

Founded on the ideals, philosophy, and vision of Dr T M A Pai, MAHE started with a medical college in Manipal in 1953. MAHE received university status in 1993 and is reputed for its high standard of education with a global outlook. The University has three campuses in India, Manipal, and Mangaluru, and offers close to 400 courses at the graduate and postgraduate levels in medicine, dental science, pharmaceutical science, nursing, allied health, life sciences, engineering, architecture, management, hospitality, commerce, geopolitics, European studies, humanities, social sciences, public health, media, and communication. About 80 centres have also been established to promote excellence in education.

MAHE is the leader in academic associations to foster and encourage teaching and research with reputed universities worldwide. The University has produced distinguished alumni, whose presence is across the globe, including Satya Nadella and Rajiv Suri, CEOs of Microsoft and Nokia, respectively. The degrees offered by MAHE are recognised worldwide.

MAHE is continually improving its research ecosystem, by making changes within a framework of the highest standards, infrastructure, incentives, and training and also empowers the creative autonomy of individual researchers in their field. This facilitates world class multi-disciplinary research. Cancer research of Life Sciences, virus research supported by CDC, new invention of genes, peeage mote is some of the examples.

“MHRD’s special status to MAHE is recognition of all what has been done in the past and acknowledgement of the potential to become a globally ranked University in the future,” said Vice Chancellor Dr H. Vinod Bhat in reaction to the achievement.

With 22 constituent professional colleges, MAHE is a prominent education provider in India with global presence through campuses in Nepal, Dubai, Malaysia, Antigua and now the proposed campus in Sri Lanka. With the emerging demand, competition and interest for private universities in Sri Lanka, this is a very promising prospect for both MAHE and the future of Sri Lankan higher education.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education is a multifaceted, comprehensive, international institution of higher education having a global presence, with a student body more than 34,000, representing 69 nationalities, and more than 134,100 alumni worldwide. MAHE’s impending entry into Sri Lanka is poised to create opportunities for Sri Lankan students to study and grow amidst global standards.
