Sampath Bank introduced ‘Cycle to Work,’ a program promoting an eco-friendly, healthy and economical mode of transportation for all employees and as part of the bank’s continued ongoing commitment to reduce its carbon footprint. The program was inaugurated in Colombo with a ceremonial event at Diyatha Uyana on Thursday, 16 June, with a presence of nearly 100 cyclists to promote this initiative.
Sampath Bank employees from Jaffna, Batticaloa, Kurunegala, Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Chilaw and Matara joined in this sustainable initiative by cycling to work from their respective locations island wide. Cyclists who participated in this new approach were entitled to a complimentary cycling kit. Safe parking spaces in security patrolled areas, and if employees need to freshen up, shower and rest room facilities are provided. Additionally, the bank has authorised flexi working hours for all to avoid cycling during rush hour traffic.
“Launching the ‘Cycle to Work’ initiative, employees might find themselves getting to work sooner. Mostly as it has become easier to move from one place to another on a bicycle and less time consuming than sitting helplessly in a traffic jam,” said Sampath Bank Group Chief Human Resource Officer Lalith Weragoda.
“There are also several social economic and health benefits of cycling to work on a regular basis. Cycling increases strength, stamina and greatly improves one’s cardiovascular fitness. Because it is a great way to stay in shape, the Bank is keen on continuing this mode of transport moving forward,” he further added.
