Sirio Ltd., a leading garment manufacturing and exporting company in Badalgama, engaged in a massive CSR program. The company in a single day planted 6,500 plantlets under its CSR program, ‘Thuru Siri Mahima’ to coincide with World Environment Day.
This comprehensive program was launched at the Sirio Ltd. premises with the leadership of Felix Fernando, CEO, Sirio Ltd. and Director of the Omega Line Group of Companies.
The program comprised of a tree-planting segment and a lecture on environmental conservation which was followed by distribution of saplings amongst the company’s employees.
The Thuru Siri Mahima program saw planting seedlings of value in 20 school premises, 35 Buddhist temple premises, 35 Catholic churches, in 20 bare lands which were suitable for fostering and in hospitals within Dambadeniya and Makandura in the vicinity of Badalgama.
Social workers, government servants, hospital staff and school children actively participated in the program.
The saplings selected for the Thuru Siri Mahima tree-planting program comprised of Kumbuk, Mee, Kaluwara, Maadan, Mangul Karanda and Sri Lankan fruits. Felix Fernando speaking at the event said, “When people talk of environmental conservation they often focus on limiting the process of cutting trees but they do not emphasise on the value of planting trees. We must love Mother Nature as we love our religions. We experience natural disasters such as landslides because we neglect conserving the environment. As a socially responsible company, Sirio constantly thinks and acts towards conserving the environment. Our mother company which is Calzedonia Group in the Verona City in Italy too makes great emphasis on environmental conservation.”
Thuru Siri Mahima tree-planting program of Sirio Ltd. will not be confined to one day. Company workers as teams engaged in planting seedlings in organisations, places of worship and schools. They would continue to nurture their seedlings in the coming years by various means until these seedlings become healthy trees. Sirio Ltd. does not free their waste to the natural environment. The company recycles its waste and also conserves rain water to water plants. The company planted trees in the areas affected by the tornado strike that took place last year.
