Organised annually by the English Literary Association of Sri Lanka Law College, the sixth annual Hulftsdorp Debating Championship, titled the ‘National Sustainability Discourse Hulftsdorp Debates 2018’ was successfully held on 18 and 19 August, at Sri Lanka Law College, situated in its namesake city of Hulftsdorp.
In order to promote the concept of sustainable development among Sri Lanka’s youth, the motions for the debate rounds revolved around the National Sustainability Report compiled by the Presidential Expert Committee.
An outcome document setting down all the noteworthy comments made by the debaters regarding the crosscutting themes in the report will be presented to the Presidential Secretariat as a gesture of support towards the National Sustainability Discourse, in hopes of moulding a brighter sustainable Sri Lanka.
‘National Sustainability Discourse Hulftsdorp Debates 2018’ played host to over 80 participants from over 14 universities nationwide.
The Hulftsdorp Debates Championship Shield was won by Chiranthi Senanayake and Navindu Palliyaguruge of Sri Lanka Law College, while Sanjit Dias and Tharuka Perera of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo emerged Runners Up. Sanjit Dias also emerged the Best Speaker of the ‘National Sustainability Discourse Hulftsdorp Debates 2018’.
Danidhu Vithanawasam and Ryan de Vas Gunasekara of the Royal Institute of Colombo emerged Novice Champions, while Tharushi Jayaratne and Dinusha Pathirana of Sri Lanka Law College emerged Novice Runners Up. The Best Amateur Adjudicator Award was won by Vinura Kuleratne of the Royal Institute of Colombo, while Maayura Sukumaran of Sri Lanka Law College emerged Runner Up.
