The newest addition to the Plasticcycle initiative is the collaboration with the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex Authority, to place plastic waste collection bins at the Sugathadasa Outdoor Stadium which generate significant amounts of recyclable plastics.
Popular sports complexes such as this observe a constant peak in visitors through various organised events bringing over 2,000 persons on any given day. Each spectator or athlete is expected to consume at least one 500 ml water or sports drink packaged in a disposable plastic bottle through/during their stay at the stadium, resulting in a significant collection of recyclable plastics.
Plasticcycle has placed five collections bins, estimated to collect 6,000 plastic (PET) bottles around the Sugathadasa Outdoor Stadium per collection cycle, in key locations such as the canteen and entry and exit points at present.
Working closely with the Sri Lanka Recyclers Association, Plasticcycle has to date collected over 25 metric tons of recyclable plastic waste and will work towards streamlining the plastic collection process at the Sugathadasa premises.
Plasticcycle is a Social Entrepreneurship Project launched in July 2017 by John Keells Holdings PLC (JKH), Sri Lanka’s largest listed conglomerate in the Colombo Stock Exchange operating over 70 companies in seven diverse industry sectors.
