The International Day of Peace is observed around the world every 21 September. This year’s theme is ‘Climate Action for Peace’, directing action towards SDG Goal No. 13 – Climate Action of United Nations.
Although activities may vary from country to country, Sri Lanka Scout Association aims to involve as many young people as possible in peace actions or activities with the objective of creating massive awareness on the roles they can play as global citizens leading to positive changes in their communities with particular focus on climate change.
‘Zero Waste’ is an island-wide project proposed by Sri Lanka Scout Association with the assistance of Messenger of Peace Initiative of World Organization of the Scout Movement. It aims to make the general public aware of proper waste disposal and to reduce, reuse and recycle non degradable domestic waste which in turn protect the natural resources and environment and minimise climate changes.
This will be achieved through advocacy of district commissioners of Sri Lanka Scout Association on 5 October and Training of Messenger of Peace District Coordinators on 12 October regarding the project. Each Messenger of Peace District Coordinator will in turn will train 100 scouts who will be acting as the messengers to conduct the Zero Waste awareness campaign towards the general public in a selected municipal area in each district.
The project will be launched on 1 November island-wide and each district team will continue project until 3 November. Progress of the projects will be evaluated on 9 November at District Messengers of Peace coordinators workshop.
The program will be conducted under the guidance of Sri Lanka Scout Association Chief Commissioner, Engineer Merrille Goonatillake and International Commissioner Kapila Kalyana Perera. Assistant Head Quarters Commissioner Dr. Asanka Eriyawa is the project manager while Prabath Kularathne, Special Commissioner was the Messenger of Peace NSO Coordinator.
