Alpha Apparels, a leading garment manufacturing and exporting company in Polgahawela, planted 5,000 plantlets under ‘Mihikathata Thuru Sevanak – 2019’ CSR program to coincide with World Environment Day of this year.
This comprehensive program was launched at the Alpha Apparels factory premises with the leadership of Felix Fernando, CEO of the Company and Director, Omega Line Group of Companies.
The objective of the program was to cater to the national need of enhancing the capacity of trees in the country that provide shade and fresh air.
Saplings selected for the tree-planting program comprised, Naa, Karanda, Nuga, Kumbuk, Mee and Mango that endow the environment with shade and coolness. The program comprised of a tree-planting session in the factory premises and a lecture on environmental conservation which was followed by distribution of saplings amongst the company’s employees.
Mihikathata Thuru Sevanak – 2019 program also saw planting seedlings of value in Buddhist temple premises, Catholic churches, waters edges, bunds and in public places in Kurunegala and Kegalle districts which were suitable for fostering.
Social workers, government servants, hospital staffs and school children actively participated in the program.
To coincide with tree planting in school premises, an art exhibition was held with a view to stimulate interest among children of environmental conservation and planting trees. Children from first grade to sixth grade participated and won certificates and prizes.
Alpha Apparels workers would continue to nurture their seedlings in the coming months until these seedlings become healthy trees. They would take pictures of the plants in one month, three months and six months durations. These pictures would bring them recognition and prizes from Alpha Apparels.
It is significant that Alpha Apparels monitor plantlets of Mihikathata Thuru Sevanak – 2019 CSR program with the blessings of the Company’s CEO Felix Fernando, until these plantlets grow to become healthy trees. Fernando speaking at the event said, “As a socially responsible company, Alpha Apparels constantly thinks and acts towards conserving the environment. Mihikathata Thuru Sevanak – 2019 is a sustainable program held to coincide with Environment Day. The plants of this CSR program will be nurtured by the company and we offer prizes to workers to motivate them to conserve environment. We have already planned to enhance the capacity of the forest in the vicinity of the company that encompasses a perimeter of 20 kilometres.”
