The vivacious troop of dancers from Deanna School of Dancing are all prepped to make the ‘headlines’ this August with ‘SWITCH!’ Experience the dynamic and enthralling choreography of the talented duo Natalie and Natasha Jayasuriya, as they ‘deliver the news’ to you through an entertaining blend of contemporary ballet and hip hop routines. It is for the first time in the history of the school that the Ballet and Hip Hop Departments join hands to bring an innovative production paying tribute to both art forms on one stage. The evening will take you through a newspaper coming to life, from the weather section where the little ones celebrate the sunny days of summer while the seniors splash it up in the rain! To crime news where the gangs hit the headlines in the Bronx to the Pharaohs coming alive in Egypt, the show will keep switching around the sights and sounds to a feet-tapping mix of the very latest hits on the charts and well known old school tunes! This is the fifth production of its kind by Deanna School of Dancing. The school is committed to nurturing and developing a unique and internationally-recognised approach to dance education, and to also encourage dancers to adopt a special and highly-valued approach to their art. Headed by Deanna Jayasuriya, her two daughters, Natasha and Natalie Jayasuriya have been exposed to a world of experience in dance which they share with their students with passion and dedication. Deanna’s eldest daughter Natalie, who moved back to Sri Lanka, is a professional dancer trained by Deanna herself and two major dance academies – The Elmhurst Ballet School and Pineapple Studio’s in the United Kingdom. Natalie’s lifelong love affair with dance began at the tender age of 2 ½ and it was nurtured by watching her mother teach. Natalie heads the Senior School and teaches Classical Ballet. And presently runs the Galle branch of DSD. Natasha has been dancing since she was two years old, and has since grown into and is recognized as a distinguished experienced dancer. Her dance background boasts an impressive portfolio of classical ballet, hip hop, street jazz, tap, Spanish, Ballroom and Latin. Her qualifications span from being a Gold Standard in Ballroom Latin American dancing. Natasha is a pioneer of freestyle, street jazz and hip hop dance in Colombo and currently teaches classes four times a week which is open to any and all who love to dance! After just three years of taking over the hip hop division of DSD, Natasha took on the challenge of creating a comfortable platform to showcase her students’ talents to the public back in 2006. The passion and energy that the students of Deanna School of Dance possess will light up the stage on 6 and 7 August at the Bishop’s College Auditorium from 7:30 p.m. onwards. Tickets for ‘SWITCH!’ are available at Deanna School of Dancing, 30/63H Longden Place, Colombo 7. For more details, contact 2504771/2.
