Sri Lankan filmmaker and producer of international fame Chandran Rutnam’s film ‘A Common Man’ won three prestigious awards at last year’s Madrid International Film Festival (MIFF). Rutnum received a special honour when he was invited to make the opening address of the festival.
The film, starring Sir Ben Kingsley, Ben Cross, James Koch, Patrick Rutnam, Dushyanth Weeraman, Sumaya Siriwardena and Jerome De Silva, scored three awards as Best Feature Film, Best Actor and the Best Director at the Madrid IFF in 2013 with Sir Ben Kingsley and Rutnam winning best actor and best director respectively. The film was produced by Manohan Nanayakkara for Asia Digital Productions Ltd.
With ‘The Best Director’ award for a main category at an international film festival being won by India’s great filmmaker Satyajit Ray more than 50 years ago, this achievement by Rutnam becomes a rare prestige for the Sri Lankan film sector.
Although Rutnam was unable to personally accept his award in Madrid last year due to the shooting of his latest movie ‘According to Matthew’, the festival officials were keen to have Rutnam at the festival. Therefore, Rutnam was invited to attend the festival for a late acceptance of his award and to make the opening address of the award ceremony on 19 July.
‘A Common Man’ had its American premiere at the prestigious Music Hall cinema, in Beverly Hills, California last year and since then the film has been distributed in most European countries by Myriad Pictures of Hollywood. It has been subtitled in Norwegian, Danish and Swedish and has been dubbed in German and other languages and has also been on numerous satellite channels.
According to Mathew, Rutnam’s next venture has already won some considerable media attention. It is a cinematic creation that recaptures the infamous ‘vicarage double murder’ also known as the ‘Fr. Mathew Peiris case’.
Bringing in acting talent from home and abroad for the movie, Rutnam is working with Alston Koch for the lead role along with Bimsara Premaratne and Jacqueline Fernandez and Kian O’Grady. Rutnam is now proceeding with his ambitious project which will no doubt mark a milestone in both his career and contribute yet another unique piece for Sri Lanka’s motion picture industry.
