The brand name Choro Benedicte has been around for quite some time, and owes it to legendary trainers such as Robert Joseph, Ken Jansen, Kalasurie Lylie Godridge, and Francis De Almeida. Productions of this vocal power house were ‘The Unfinished Symphony’, ‘Memories’, ‘Harmony’, ‘Festival of Songs’ and ‘Harmonic Progression I & II’, while ‘Shades of Sound’, ‘Song Shine’, ‘Vochestra’ are a few productions in which Choro Benedicte was featured in. Choro Benedicte is now directed by Krishan Rodrigo and Dave De Visser, who has moulded together an outfit that will delight audiences with their special brand of musical renditions. While not losing touch with the classics and Sinhalese evergreens, one sees more contemporary songs being included in its repertoires.
The group also recently launched their first-ever recorded covers album titled ‘Gradus Unus’ – ‘The First Step’. This unique album is the first ever 100% a cappella album to be produced in Sri Lanka.
The album featured 10 cover songs from popular artists such as Madonna, Sting and the Police, U2, Rascal Flats, Imogen Heap, Queen, One Direction, The Beach Boys and Billy Joel. All song arrangements were recorded using vocals only and no other instrument. Choro Benedicte formerly known as the Old Bens Chorale still consists only of past choristers of St. Benedict’s College and shows its connection to its Alma Mater by featuring the highly acclaimed ‘Choir of St. Benedict’s College’ in their albums.
