With the emergence of the Sri Lankan contemporary art scene over the past few years, it has become pertinent that presentations focusing on the subjects of art and design appreciation, collecting and the relation between industries be offered towards those with high net worth.
The growth of any art scene takes place alongside economic development and it is essential that Sri Lanka’s art scene experiences a sustainable growth supported by the corporate sector as well as investor and diplomatic communities. The resistance faced in the past to such development and support is often due to the dearth of information being supplied by the creative industries themselves and the general misconception of these industries. The editions of Collector’s Desk aim to provide an open door to those individuals with the interest in learning about Sri Lanka’s growing creative industries.
Collector’s Desk, organised by ARTRA Magazine and Saskia Fernando Gallery in collaboration with The Residences at One Galle Face, Shangri La Hotel & Resorts, is a series of curated art events that takes place in the form of quarterly art talks, panels, tours and presentations by eminent international and local professionals in the field of art. The invitee only event caters to an audience interested in impacting the growth of the local art scene.
The third edition of Collector’s Desk will encompass a discussion on contemporary Sri Lankan art and recent developments internationally by Azara Jaleel, Founder and Editor of ARTRA Magazine and Saskia Fernando, Founder of Saskia Fernando Gallery and Art Space Sri Lanka. The event will take place on 30 September at One Galle Face followed by an exhibition and tour of curated works of art by leading contemporary artists Ruwan Prasanna, Rajni Perera, Prageeth Manohansa and Priyantha Udagedara displayed in the show apartment of The Residences at One Galle Face, Shangri La Hotels & Resorts.
The first edition of Collector’s Desk took place in December 2015 at Saskia Fernando Gallery where speaker Jyoti Dhar, an internationally acclaimed art critic and curator born and raised in New York, conducted a comprehensive presentation on her personal involvement in the art scenes of Dubai, India and Sri Lanka consecutively.
The second edition of Collector’s Desk was held in May 2016 at the Saskia Fernando Gallery and featured a riveting panel discussion between Udayshanth Fernando, CEO of Paradise Road Group of Companies and Niloo Jayatilake, Head of Investment at Softlogic PLC. The panelists shared their histories of art collecting and provided the audience with engaging insight into the subject of art collecting alongside its position as an investment portfolio.
Saskia Fernando Gallery and ARTRA Magazine are two of the country’s leading professional art organisations that are consistently supporting the growth and development of the industry. Sri Lanka’s largest contemporary art gallery and Sri Lanka’s only art magazine and media platform in partnership with the most exclusive new address in Colombo aims to spearhead the objective set forth for this exclusive series of curated art events.
