Himayath Nuzraan, aged 10, last week launched his latest book titled ‘My World’, which includes his own illustrations.

He has previously written two books, ‘Tree’s Words - the Cure of the Forest’ (2017) and ‘Home’, a story about rebelliousness and family ties. It claimed third place in the 2016 Commonwealth Children’s World Writing Competition.

Himayath was the first Sri Lankan to have the honour of winning this prestigious award.

A student and now the Junior Head Boy of British School in Colombo, Himayath spends most of his free time playing cricket, football and swimming.

"When I am relaxing I love to read. I love to write too," he added.

His latest book is a compilation of poems he has written since he was seven. "I love poetry and its great sense of rhythm, flow and rhyme. I love to express my feelings using poems," says Himayath about his new book.

He said the title ‘My World’ was chosen since nearly all of the poems in the book have been written after some kind of memory or experience in his life.

"I love this book because of all the vibrant illustrations with a smooth mixture of poetry blended together to make something I prefer to call absolutely magical!" he added.

The proceeds from the sale of the latest book (priced at Rs. 850) will be donated to the Maharagama Cancer Hospital.

"My only uncle succumbed to cruel cancer just a year ago. While I know there’s nothing in the world I can do to bring him back, I hope my little effort will help someone stay longer with their loved ones if not save them from cruel cancer," says Himayath.
