A group of Sri Lankan migrant workers added the multifaceted colours of Sri Lanka at a Cultural Festival of Traditional Dances held at the famous Ledra Square in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, on 30 June. Sri Lankan performers with traditional costumes became a major attraction to the large crowd of Cypriots, foreign nationals and media personnel present at the event.
The event was organised by the Cyprus Police Department and the Nicosia municipality with an intention of bringing the Cyprus police closer to the migrant community in Cyprus. The Sri Lanka Consulate General in Nicosia brought the skilful migrants in Cyprus together and facilitated their participation at the festival. Other than Sri Lanka, immigrant workers from several countries including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, The Philippines, Vietnam, Bulgaria, and Cyprus also performed at the event. The Chief of the Cyprus Police, Kypros Michaelides and Consul General of Sri Lanka in Cyprus, Rohana Ambagolla were invited as the chief guests. Around 7,000 Sri Lankans are currently employed in different sectors in Cyprus.
