‘Seven: The Seeker, the Thinker’ is bringing in a dance treat to all art lovers this November at the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Col 7. Choreographed and directed by Umeshi Rajeendra of Mesh Academy of Dance, the production will contribute to making a difference in dance, and the perception of dance in Sri Lanka by bringing to life dance revolving around the number seven.
Mesh Academy prides itself as a vibrant, dynamic, and creative cross cultural establishment, awakening the love of dance focusing on each student’s development and cultivating dance as an educative and artistic form. Commenting on the show, Mesh Academy of Dance Founder and Artistic Director Umeshi Rajeendra enthusiastically stated: “The show, which is created through kinesthetic and meaning making, will allow the audience to momentarily transcend their own personal journey and spark conversations from multiple angles, voices and perspectives. It will be fun, creative and intellectual!”
The Academy is also proud to announce its collaboration with the Department of Drama, Oriental Ballet and Contemporary Dance of the University of Visual and Performing Arts, where Umeshi is a visiting lecturer. Five students from the University and eight students from the Mesh Academy of Dance will take the stage of seven.
“I am excited with the prospect of bridging the gap between students at the university, who are predominantly from out of Colombo, and those who train in Colombo, to collectively grow and personally experience dance in its rawest forms!”
Joining her in this adventure is Natasha Senanayake as the musical composer.
“As with all our productions, the music that accompanies our work is not an after-thought; rather it is an essential, meaningful ingredient and we are happy to have Natasha Senanayake as our composer to create an original score for two of the three works. It is her first time creating music to dance and we can’t wait for the audience to hear her creation.”
The performance will take place on 10, 11 and 12 November at the University of Visual and Performing Arts Auditorium from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dancers Niren Ranasinghe, Annabella Brochard, Roshni Gunaratne, Romesh Fernando, Onara De Silva, Sandarangi Perera, Dilkushi Wickremasinghe, Rangi Fernando, Pathum Dharmaratne, Indika Lakmal, Bhagya Laksha, Daham Anurada and Shashika Madushanare scheduled to perform.
