The Bangladesh High Commission and the Education Ministry of Sri Lanka together is inviting schoolchildren from across the island to join a creative writing/arts competition.
The competition is to commemorate International Mother Language Day on 21 February.
Any Tamil, Sinhalese, or English medium student from Grade VI to XIII can submit their work in any one language (English/Sinhala/Tamil), based on the theme “Language for Unity”.
A child’s work to be submitted has to be signed and stamped by the School Principal or Class Teacher (to attest the originality of the submissions).
Name of the child and school, grade, contact details (mailing address, cell number of parent, email) has to be clearly written at the back of the submission.
Painting competition is Group A and for Grades VI to VIII. It will be creative art in any colour or medium on A3 paper. First prize is Rs. 10,000; second prize is Rs. 7,000 and third prize Rs. 5,000.
Creative Essay is Group B for Grades IX to XI. Maximum word count is 500. First prize is Rs. 12,000, second prize is Rs. 10,000 and third prize is Rs. 8,000.
Poetry is Group C for Grades XII and XIII. No maximum or minimum word limit. First prize is Rs. 20,000, second prize Rs. 15,000 and third prize Rs. 12,000.
For Group A, paintings based on creative imagination are encouraged. A painting can be submitted in sketch or colour and in any medium, inspired by the theme. The original work, done in A3 Art Paper, should reach unfolded to: Bangladesh High Commissioner, High Commission of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka, 3 Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7. A picture should be emailed, in advance.
For Group C, written submissions have to be typed.
All submissions will be adjudged based on the originality of the works. A jury will adjudge the winning creative art/works. The adjudged children will be awarded, together with a certificate, at a ceremony at Independence Square on 21 February 2020, by the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
