Naturub Group was awarded the Energy Efficiency Award for 2015 by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority for their creditable performance in the industry. A special feature of their success was that they received this accolade under the Large Scale Production Category for the third successful year.
Naturub Managing Director Tissa Eleperuma received the award on behalf of the organisation at the awards ceremony held recently at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. Naturub, the largest and most versatile apparel accessories manufacturer in the whole of South Asia and situated in Panadura, received this award in lieu of their creditable efforts in conserving energy in the production process.
“We produce apparel accessories for world renown brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Marks & Spencer and Next. Out of the total production, 70% is supplied to apparel exporters in Sri Lanka, 20% is exported directly while the balance 10% is supplied to the domestic market. Our main buyers are UK, US and other European countries. Our marketing offices are located in London and Leicester in UK, Bangalore and Chennai in India, Dhaka and Chittagong in Bangladesh,” stated Deputy General Manager (Marketing and Planning) Manjula Manapperuma.
“In our factory we manufacture apparel accessories such as elastic, cords, tapes, threads etc. We also colour polyester, nylon and cotton. Before 2010, we used 200,000 litres of furnace oil. However, now we have ceased using furnace oil and instead use saw dust, coconut shells and other natural fossils as fuel. LED bulbs are fitted for lighting of the factory premises in addition VSD’s are used to control liquor flow and ID/FD fans, together with the latest air conditioning technology is installed in the factory which helps to cut down electricity usage. Rain water is collected and used for production processes.
“The process waste water is discharged to the environment with the auspices of the Central Environment Authority standards. The waste sludge from the dyeing process is given to Holcim Cement for incineration. Up to the present, we have accrued an energy saving of approximately 300,000 KW Hours, and have been able to thereby prevent a carbon emission of 50,000 kg and thus reducing our carbon footprint by 34%. Other factories under the umbrella of Naturub Group are situated in the Investment Zones in Horana, Poruwadanda and also in Chittagong in Bangladesh,” stated Deputy General Manager (Engineering) Pradeep de Silva.
