The SLIIT Walk 2018 charity project, organised by the Student Interactive Society 2018/19 of SLIIT, successfully concluded recently, marking an impressive milestone of amassing the highest budget of over Rs. 2.5 million from the proceedings.
The funds raised were utilised to develop a fully-equipped computer lab and provide 1000 books and equipment for the library at Verehara Bandaranayaka Maha Vidyalaya, Papiliyawala. The lab was ceremoniously handed over on 2 August 2019. The Chief Guest on the occasion was SLIIT Vice Chancellor/CEO Prof. Lalith Gamage.
Verehara Bandaranayaka Maha Vidyalaya, Papiliyawala, is a mixed school with 650 students from Grades 1-13. The project also commemorated SLIIT’s 20-year journey in achieving higher education excellence. The lab was equipped with 20 desktops, tables, chairs, projectors, plus internet connections and networking facilities. 1000 books, cupboards, chairs and tables were also handed over to the school’s library.
‘Keeping Dreams Alive’, the theme of SLIIT Walk, was aimed to uplift the quality of life of these underprivileged children. The event also brought together SLIIT students and staff, showcasing the institute’s diverse student life, while fostering collaboration among SLIIT faculties as well as branches located across the country. The Walk, held for the 8th consecutive year, drew over 6000 students and staff marching in solidarity for a worthy cause.
Organised by the SLIIT Student Interactive Society (SIS), the successful event drew ideas and contributions from students, who also assisted in the designing of the Walk t-shirt.
Commenting on the Walk, SLIIT Vice Chancellor/CEO Prof. Lalith Gamage said, “I wish to thank all those involved, especially the Student Interactive Society, for once again organising this event for charity and taking the initiative for a good cause. As an educational institute recognised for excellence, the walk is in line with our vision of disseminating knowledge to the youth, and this charity, which specifically focuses on the development of education for rural youth.”
“SLIIT endeavours to ensure that Sri Lanka profits from information technology, business management and engineering by providing education and training, conducting and promoting research and development, providing consultancy and software services, and nurturing IT ventures, thus ensuring the availability of a rich pool of experts,” added Academic Affairs Director Yashas Mallawarachchi.
“Our Walk clearly demonstrates SLIIT’s rich culture and diverse student life and in line with its vision of fostering and promoting innovation, and producing world-class intellectuals to serve the nation and beyond. I thank all those who tirelessly dedicated their efforts towards the success of the project and extend my heartfelt gratitude to all students, staff members, and SLIIT Alumni for their immense contribution in making this project a reality,” added SLIIT Student Interactive Society President Mihiran Weerathunga.
