The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program offered by the University of Kelaniya is an exclusive business qualification that is endorsed by a State University of Sri Lanka. Realizing that the current economy is based on skills and productivity, the DBA program seeks to address the demand for strong corporate leaders who are resourceful and original in their approach to business. 

To learn more about the DBA program, we interviewed Prof. C. Pathirawasam – the Course Coordinator of the DBA program at the University of Kelaniya. He is a professor in the field of finance and has over 25 years of experience working in the Department of Commerce and Financial Management at the University of Kelaniya.

What is DBA?

DBA is a ‘professional doctorate’ that focuses on knowledge designed to solve problems likely to be produced in the workplace. DBA is developed in the context of practice and is followed by Practitioners, Managers and Industry professionals. 

In accordance with the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF), DBA is a SLQF 12 qualification which is the highest level of qualification awarded in Sri Lanka. It is an internationally recognized qualification that was first introduced in USA, UK and Australia. Despite being relatively new, the DBA program at the University of Kelaniya is in high demand.

1.Quality

The quality of the DBA program at Kelaniya is unparalleled to any other DBA program in Sri Lanka. It is a qualification that should be earned and not purchased. The first year is allocated for course work but the second and third years are based entirely on independent research under the guidance of two extremely qualified supervisors. It grants students the chance to be original and innovative in finding solutions to practical problems. 

2.Qualified and friendly Panel of Lecturers 

Only qualified lecturers and supervisors from State Universities that hold a PhD or a DBA degree is recruited. The teaching staff is extremely friendly and is easily approachable to students, which is why DBA at Kelaniya is a preferred choice among students. 

3.Personal care 

The most unique feature of DBA at Kelaniya is the progress meeting held every six months for students. Each student is interviewed for ten minutes by the program management to address any concerns of students. Every issue is addressed through customized workshops. Personal care of students is considered a top priority. Only a total of 25 students are allocated per batch as it is easy to pay individual attention to students and give personal feedback.  

4.Facilities 

Students have the option of following the program online or attend lectures physically. The program includes an industry tour where students get to travel mainly to developed countries and gain knowledge and experience from their business practices. The tour includes company visits and research-based lectures which add to the unique learning experience that is only provided at Kelaniya University. 

A breakdown of the DBA program

DBA is for senior executives of established businesses who hold at least a Master’s Degree or an MPhil from a recognized university. The period of study is a minimum of three academic years and maximum of six. It consists of coursework (Phase 1) and a research component (Phase 2).
