A grand Thai Pongal at Cinnamon Grand

As Hindus around the world celebrate Thai Pongal this Thursday (15), Cinnamon Grand Colombo is ready to recreate the traditional festival of good harvest through a festive feast at the hotel’s South Indian restaurant, Chutneys. Decorated with the characteristic kolam on the floor, an arc of banana leaves and sugar canes, and greeted with kunkumam and santhanam markings on the forehead; Chutneys will offer the perfect ambiance for families and friends to enjoy traditional Thai Pongal dishes with special vegetarian cuisines from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. With the Pongal celebrations beginning at 12 noon by boiling fresh milk; the buffet, priced at Rs.1,400++++ consists of customary soups, salads, starters, mains, rice counters, action counters and desserts with a unique inventive touch, along with a special Pongal counter. The Pongal Counter, will feature a mix of traditional sweets and savouries like sakkarai pongal (jaggery and rice mash), kalkandu satham (sugar and rice mash), aval (pressed rice), panchamirtham (banana, honey and dates combination), vada, sundal (boiled chickpeas) and kolkatta (steamed rice dumplings). Also on the menu are specialised dishes such as ven pongal (rice and moong dhal), vendhaya kuzhambu (fenugreek curry), vada perugu pulusu (vada in tempered yoghurt curry), kappa avail (tapioca cooked coconut), mathanga thoran (kerala preparation of red pumpkin), urulai masiyal (semi mash spicy potato), thayir semiya (smooth curd and vermicelli preparation) and annanas upkari (salted spicy pineapples) among others.
