The Dngzhì Festival or Winter Solstice Festival is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese and other East Asians during the Dongzhi solar term (winter solstice). Hilton Colombo’s Chinese Chef Ong Shi Yong will be serving up a mini menu at Graze Kitchen on 22 December during dinner.
Traditionally, the Dongzhi Festival is a time for the family to get together. One activity that occurs during these get-togethers (especially in the southern parts of China and in Chinese communities overseas) is the making and eating of Tang Yuan or balls of glutinous rice, which symbolise reunion.
Tang Yuan are made of glutinous rice flour and sometimes brightly coloured. Each family member receives at least one large Tang Yuan in addition to several small ones. The flour balls are occasionally pink or green. They are cooked in a sweet soup or savory broth with both the ball and the soup/broth served in one bowl.
The mini menu will consist of savory Tang Yuan; stuffed spicy minced chicken served in savory chicken soup, sweet Tang Yuan; assorted Tang Yuan in sweet pandan and ginger soup, stuffed red bean Tang Yuan sweet pandan and ginger soup, dried Tang Yuan; and crushed peanut coated Tang Yuan.
