Why does the UN exist?

The strategic intent of the League of Nations (in 1920) was to prevent a Second World War, which it couldn’t do, leading to it being replaced by the UN in 1945. Unlike the first two WWs, the world may have not come to a grinding halt, but what we are experiencing today is a Third World War in slow motion. Meanwhile, the UN has built a deeply entrenched and high fixed-cost bureaucracy, which is eventually funded by the global taxpayer. Given the complexity of the global wars we are fighting today and the challenges we face, does the UN have the agility, mindset and ‘fire in its belly’ to counter these? Is it time for a new, limited lifespan organisation with ‘do or die’ deliverables?
