Legendary couturier Kirthi Sri Karunaratne turns 80 today. Tracing his journey over the years in an interview with the Daily FT last Friday morning, he recalled how he entered the field of design at a time it wasn’t heard of in the country – and very much frowned upon.
Becoming Sri Lanka’s first designer didn’t come easy – first he had to convince his family to let him abandon his medical studies and pursue design instead. Upon his return from Paris, he smiled speaking of how Colombo society women came for his first show ready to laugh. However, his designs spoke for him, and in no time Kirthi’s name was on everyone’s lips.
