With one road death occurring every four hours in Sri Lanka, Union Assurance (UA) has undertaken the challenge of creating road safety awareness among school children as a structured and continuous project under its CSR platform of safety awareness in partnership with the Sri Lanka Police.
Recklessness and disobeying road rules and traffic signals are some of the main reasons for many accidents in Sri Lanka with a large number of fatal deaths reported that of pedestrians. According to Sri Lanka Police, the total number of accidents reported from January-March 2013 is 2,218. Road safety awareness programs targeting school children are an imperative course of action in such an environment.
One such program was recently conducted at the premises of Ananda College in Maradana on 13 June 2013. Fifteen other leading schools also participated in the program which included students from St. Joseph’s College, Wesley College, Ananda Balika Vidyalaya, Zahira College, Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya and Gothami Balika Vidyalaya.
The program was facilitated by the Sri Lanka Police and coordinated and sponsored by Union Assurance. Students were made aware of good road safety practices via presentations, and a street demonstration carried out to show practical methods of being safe on the road. Further, Traffic Warden jackets were presented to selected 810 students in the mentioned schools. Two similar programs were also held recently in Tangalle, Hambantota, Ampara, Batticaloa, Kilinochchi and Manikulam. Over 4,030 students have been part of the programs during this year.
“Our staff act as a forefront in our CSR activities; and the strong presence island-wide helps us to be part of many projects which include grass root level work in health and safety awareness,” said Dharshana Amarasynghe, AGM Marketing at Union Assurance.
UA operates on the values of Corporate Social Responsibility which are firmly embedded in the UA way of life. Taking the challenge of incorporating CSR in the organisation was formulated to be in line with its long term vision and social involvement with local communities, and to help sustain the economic and development of the nation. UA hopes to keep strengthening its CSR reach and to be part of positive social change as a ‘trusted’ insurance provider of the nation.
