It is part of the college’s expanded corporate social responsibility towards the industry, to promote and support tourism and hospitality management education for future industry leaders, through these scholarship grants.
Following an invitation for all staff members to apply for the opportunity to further their education, Anbalagam Suresh Rajeef in the Engineering Dept. and Navin Anthony Perera in the Kitchen Dept were selected. Navin Anthony received a two-year scholarship for CTH Diploma in Hospitality management (QCF level 4 and 5) Suresh Rajeef received a scholarship for CTH Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management (QCF level 5) Module; Facilities Management.
“The candidates who applied for the scholarship were all deserving and it would be a great asset to have all furthering their studies, but it was Suresh’s and Navin’s initiative to cross-train and extend themselves in their duties, which made the difference,” said the hotel’s Training Manager Suresha Keerthiratne.
Thames College CEO/Head of Academics Sanju Dissanayake stated, “The mission of Thames College is to develop knowledge and insights for the future of the Tourism and Hospitality industry, and in no way can this mission be better realised than by supporting outstanding and deserving students who intend to join our trade. We are thrilled to extend our scholarships to Suresh Rajeef and Navin Anthony Perera of Galle Face Hotel, as well as commend them on their achievements thus far, and we look forward to all that they will accomplish in the future.”
She added, “We are strong advocates for further education and encouraging personnel of the Tourism and Hospitality industries to grow with the need of the hour.”
“This scholarship is one that means a lot to me as I know what it will do for my career development,” expressed scholarship awardee Navin Anthony Perera. “I joined the GFH team on 21.01.2008, working for the ala carte and fine dining kitchen as a 11 Commis cook. With my creative talents, cooking skills and wide knowledge of eastern cuisine, I am looking forward to receiving my Management skills with the scholarship to enhance my future career path.”
“The award is a huge help for me financially, in easing the costs of this course. I am grateful to have received this grant, and am indebted to Thames for its support of my career,” stated Anbalagan Suresh Rajeef, who joined GFH as a trainee in the Engineering Department on 10 September 1999. He was promoted as a semi skilled worker in 2005 and later promoted to the position of Maintenance Clerk in 2012. Presently, he handles all the engineering documentation, liaising with other departments, maintaining all the files related to MEP and Civil departments, liaising with Government and local authorities for policies and standards. He is a self-motivated and excellent team worker who deserves the opportunity for a better future.
