The Gunasekera Children’s Home along Nawala Road was the brainchild of Garcia Gunasekera who owned the land and had a desire to give a better life for less fortunate female children. She called upon the assistance of the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City, to set up a trust to own her land, on which the Rotary Club constructed the first compact dormitory for 20 children. From humble beginnings in 1993, newer, better buildings and facilities were constructed through the munificence of kind and generous organizations and individuals .The Home now houses 20 children between five and 18 years of age, all of whom receive schooling and training in life skills. It is currently managed and run by Gunasekera Children’s Home Welfare Society under the legal supervision of Department of Probation and Childcare. The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City whose President and Secretary of each year are ex-officio trustees, has made it their mission to make Christmas an enjoyable and memorable event for the children of this home by hosting a Christmas party every year with active the participation of their own Rotaract Club. This year too was another such occasion, where the children were given a meal of delicious Christmas foods and goodies prepared by the members. They also had the pleasure of receiving Christmas gifts from the Rotary Club and took part in many enjoyable games organised by the members. The current president of the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City, Malini Kiriella stated that it gave the club members much satisfaction to see the joy and happiness mirrored on the faces of each of these children during the occasion. She added that the matrons and teachers of the home informed that this was an event that the children looked forward to eagerly each year and that the club would continue to host events of this nature every year.
