When the tsunami hit Sri Lanka in December of 2004, St. Mary’s Vidyalaya, Mattakkuliya had catastrophic damages as a result of its close proximity to the sea. The school buildings were destroyed and certain buildings of the school had to be demolished and built anew. Through the generous donations of the Government of Slovenia beginning in 2007, and the partnership of the Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka, the school re-opened in June 2013 with the presence of the Ambassador of Slovenia and Honorary Consul of Slovenia in Sri Lanka Janez Premoze, Sanath Ukwatte and Milinda Moragoda, who was the chief guest at this event. The support by a consortium of donors from the Republic of Slovenia, including the Slovenian Red Cross, Caritas Slovenia and Slovenia’s foundation for UNICEF and the collaboration efforts with the Republic of Finland, have been greatly appreciated by the school and have significantly improved the students’ quality of life.
