Mount Lavinia Beach Lovers is a multi-phase project commenced in July 2016 powered by the people, for the people and environment to educate and implement sustainable solutions to bring about the changes we wish to see in the world.

Vision: A self-sustaining “green” beach that will be an attraction to tourists and locals in Colombo, facilitate the creation and improvement of avenues of purposeful employment on the beach and be a major driver of business to the area.

Mission: Transforming Mount Lavinia beach into a sustainable model “green beach” that can be an example to other coastal areas around Sri Lanka

Mount Lavinia Beach Lovers – The beginning a truly “green” revolution

July 2016 witnessed the emergence of ‘Mount Lavinia Beach Lovers’ (MLBL) – a unique multi-phase community project led by team members Avrillé de Vallière, Dhanushka Abeysinghe, Fathima Anissa and Janaka that aims to unite artists, musicians and beach lovers.

The project’s mission is to transform Mount Lavinia beach into a safe, clean, sustainably-operating artistic and creative model “green beach” that can serve as an example to other coastal areas around Sri Lanka. This project is powered by the people, for the people to ensure education and sustainable solutions are executed to bring about the changes we want to see in the world.

The project’s first phase which was initiated last month was a success hosted at La Voile Blanche and sponsored by Red FM, the Rotary Club, Lavinia Art Gallery, Savaary Sri Lanka, The AgenZ, Sampath Herath, Shelton’s Restaurant, DhivaharRavichandiran and Namal de Silva. It featured an extensive clean-up of Mount Lavinia beach accompanied by music and an interactive art installation led by Dhanushka Abeysinghe that is intended to continue throughout the project and well after, on a monthly basis. A sneak peek into what the MLBL project aims to achieve throughout its established seven phases is as follows:

  •  Phase 01: Monthly beach clean-ups and awareness-raising via art and other creative mediums
  •     Phase 02: Establishment of an effective litter disposal system
  •     Phase 03: Wastewater management system implementation
  •     Phase 04: Restoration of mangroves and beach foliage within the planned areas
  •     Phase 05: Setting up of a community center for MLBL
  •     Phase 06: Reconstruction of the reef and green energy
  •     Phase 07: Mount Lavinia beach operating as an eco-friendly, artistic, sustainably operating attraction producing fun events, venues and commercial opportunities.
