Children all around the world look forward to Christmas, that one special occasion of the year with great anticipation and excitement, with the pleasure of knowing that they will be showered with presents while partaking in all the festivities that are part and parcel of this significant celebration.

Sadly however, not all children are able to celebrate this festive season in a similar fashion; especially the little ones undergoing treatment at the Paediatric Ward at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital, who are valiantly battling various stages of cancer.

As a Corporate that genuinely cares about the welfare of these brave young fighters, under the direction of its CEO Lalith De Silva, the National Mobile Telecommunication Service Provider Mobitel in line with its mission to ‘Care, Share and Deliver’ took on the task of ensuring that these young children enjoyed this year’s Christmas just like every other child.

With this in mind, a team of Mobitel’s employees headed by Nilanjith Gunawardena (President of the Mobitel mClub – an association set up amongst Mobitel employees that promotes social, sports and entertainment activities among staff) together with De Silva and his wife paid a visit to the Paediatric Ward of the Maharagama Cancer Hospital, bearing gifts, nutritional supplements and medical items to present to the resident children at a special Christmas function, prepared solely with the intention of giving these children the opportunity of celebrating the seasonal festivities amidst family and friends.

Speaking on the initiative, De Silva said: “It’s truly a moving sight to see the joy and excitement of these brave young children, who despite the poignant circumstances they find themselves in, choose to enjoy the best of what life has to offer them.

It was a personal endeavour of mine to take forward this initiative with an equally passionate team at Mobitel to ensure that this will be a memorable Christmas that will linger in those young minds and hearts as they celebrate it with their family and all of us at Mobitel.

This is one of the many socially responsible endeavours Mobitel will be partaking in, under the company brand promise, ‘We Care. Always.’ with the intention of enhancing the lives of our community and our nation.”

A choir of talented Mobitel employees sang a medley of popular Christmas Carols while the highlight of the event was the arrival of a much-anticipated Santa Claus that entertained the children.

The Paediatric Cancer Ward at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital comprises of over 120 resident children ranging from infants to 14-year-olds.

As a socially responsible corporate entity, Mobitel will continue to conduct similar activities in the near future with the objective of uplifting the lives of Sri Lankans across the nation.
