With a rich heritance of over 40 years, Laojee renowned for bringing people together over a cup of tea, enabled family bonding under the theme of Avurudde Ekamuthuwai, Laojee Rasa Musuwai, and carried out a novel activity by providing free bus rides home to the travellers rushing to get home before the new year.

It is the time of the year when the Central Bus Terminus in Pettah is a swarm of people trying desperately to board buses which are already overcrowded with travellers trying to get home in time to celebrate Avurudu. Laojee stepped in at this most ‘trying time’ with a refreshing offer of taking people home on 9 and 10 April, comfortably and free of charge by organising 10 buses from the Colombo Central Bus Terminal to various parts of the island covering all provinces.

Happy families, young men and women and even the senior citizens of our country were seen enjoying a hot cup of Laojee on their way home when the buses stopped at wayside shops for the cup that cheers.

Sipping a hot cup of tea, Don Karunasena said he was relieved to board this bus and also happy to note that he did not have to pay his fare. “Thanks to Laojee I can have a comfortable free ride home and reach my destination earlier that I expected,” he said.

The Mallawarchhchi family seated comfortably in one of the Laojee buses headed toward the hills, spoke happily about their good luck this Avurudu.

We live in Colombo said the school teacher and her bank employee husband who have two children also schooling in Colombo. But we go back home to visit my parents who live on the outskirts of Kandy and enjoy our New Year vacation there. Usually it is so difficult to get a seat and a good bus, but this time we are very lucky,” they said happily, sipping a cup of Laojee.

Talking about the campaign, Laojee Brand Manager Aadhil Asver said, “There is a huge rush at the main bus terminal during the new year, often nearing stampede levels. We wanted to ease the tension of travellers this Avurudu by providing transport to them by joining hands together with Sirasa FM. Laojee re-established the brand’s strong values of strengthening and renewing lasting bonds with this gesture.”
