Kaleidoscope an exhibition by the students of the Hardy Centre of Art is to be held on 17 and 18 September, at Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, Colombo 7, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Nine students from the advanced classes including two adults will be part of this creative expression. Rhuani Rambukwelle the principal and teacher of the Hardy Centre of Art named this exhibition Kaleidoscope because of the shapes, sizes and multiple reflections of colour featured in each piece of work done by the students. A kaleidoscope operates on the principle of multiple reflections, where several mirrors are placed at an angle to one another. As the tube is rotated, the tumbling of the coloured objects presents varying colours and patterns. Arbitrary patterns show up as a beautiful symmetrical pattern created by the reflections.

Similarly, the students have used a myriad of colours, in various textures, patterns and designs. The results are unique pieces of art that bring out the inner talent of her students. Rhuani says the name Kaleidoscope is an apt description of the nature of this exhibition. One of the intrinsic qualities of the Hardy Centre encourages one to be adventurous in the use of unlimited mediums and helps students to experiment and produce art that portrays their inner self.

Some of the artists have been with Rhuani from the age of five and now in their teens (their ages range from 9 to over 55 years) and have turned out to be brilliant artists. The exhibition will have each of the students work displayed in a section apportioned to each one.

The artists exhibiting are Anasha Thirathdas, Anya and Kiara Abhayaratne, Nirmala De Silva, Hriday Mohnani, Matthew Vitharna, Ranudi Thotawatte, Sarinda Abeynaike, Savithri Jayanetti, Shanuk Goonetilleke and Tiyara Senanayake.

The artworks will display the students’ skills as artists and the techniques taught by Rhuani, being acrylic, pencil sketches, charcoal, oils, water colour, encaustic, quilling, plaster of Paris, pen and ink, colour pencils and gum embossing.
