Janashakthi Insurance, which is rapidly gaining a reputation as the most eco-friendly insurer in Sri Lanka, recently extended its environmental protection program to Polonnaruwa by conducting an environment cleaning program in the immediate aftermath of Poson full moon Poya day celebrations.
Polonnaruwa is one of the key cities which attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims annually during Poson season, with an estimated 50,000 pilgrims making the trip this year.
Janashakthi teamed up with the Thamankaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha, National Youth Centre – Polonnaruwa and the Central Environmental Authority – Polonnaruwa. Over 50 volunteers and school children participated in the task of cleaning a wide-spread polluted land area of several kilometres.
“At Janashakthi, we aim to protect the community and that is why we decided to get involved in this project. It was a pleasure to positively contribute to the community in this way,” said Brand Activation Manager Kelum Weerasinghe.
“A heavy concentration of pilgrims can make any area vulnerable to environmental pollutants. This can also cause the spread of diseases like dengue, which has been a persistent problem in Sri Lanka,” added Weerasinghe.
Across the years, Janashakthi Insurance has held many outreach initiatives as part of their commitment to serve the community, from special kidney screening programs to the sponsorship of young rural athletics and dengue prevention programs.
Most recently, Janashakthi came forward to help raise funds for those diagnosed with cerebral palsy via the 10-day ‘Around the Pearl’ bike ride.
The company expressed special thanks to Premasiri Munasinghe, Chairman, Pradeshiya Sabha, Polonnaruwa, A.G. Senewirathne, Youth Services Officer, National Youth Centre – Polonnaruwa, youth gathered to the project and G. Weerasena, Environment Office, CEA Polonnaruwa who provided enormous support in order to make the project successful.
