HDFC celebrates World Habitat Day at Seevali Maha Vidyalaya, Borella

In commemorating World Habitat Day 2014, HDFC Bank organised a special program at the Seevali Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Borella recently with the collaboration of UN-HABITAT Colombo office. Gunathilake, UN Habitat Human Settlement Program Sri Lanka representative Indu Wijesuriya and Seevali M.M. Vidyalaya Vice Principal G.H. Anura   The objective was to raise awareness on the World Habitat Day theme, importance of protecting the environment in our towns and cities and basic human rights on adequate shelter among the school children. Parallel to this event, gift packs containing exercise books and other stationary items were provided to the children of this school and reading books were donated to the school library. World Habitat Day fell on 6 October this year and the United Nations turned the spotlight on the people who live or have lived in informal settlements, listening to ‘Voices from Slums’. The goal was s to raise awareness of life conditions in some areas which are crowded, with inadequate shelter, poor or no water and sanitation facilities and no security of tenure. In commemorating this special day and with that objective HDFC Bank chose Seevali Maha Vidyalaya, where most of the students are from under served settlements. HDFC Bank’s Chief Finance Officer D.V. Pathirana, Chief Manager (Business Development and Marketing) H.S. Guna-thilake, Vice Principal of Seevali Madya Maha Vidyalaya G.H. Anura, Primary Principal Dayani Perera, Representatives from UN Habitat office in Colombo and members of the HDFC bank staff also participated in this event.
