DSI plans massive clean-up of Galle Fort

DSI has stepped in to carry out a massive cleaning up campaign in the Galle Fort on Sunday, 11 March as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations.

“We are celebrating our 50th anniversary in the middle of this year. We thought of starting off the celebrations by doing something useful to the community,” a spokesman for DSI said.

“Galle Fort being very much part of the country’s heritage over several centuries and in view of its importance as a tourist attraction, we thought it would be an ideal place for a CSR project to commemorate a milestone in the history of DSI,” he said, adding, “The place should be kept spotlessly clean to attract visitors and also make it pleasing to the eye.”

Joining the project will be the Galle Mayor Methsiri de Silva and the staff of the Galle Municipal Council and the officials of the Galle Heritage Foundation led by its president Parakrama Dahanayake. The Galle Division Police Superintendent, S C Vidanapathirana and the Headquarters Inspector Sathis Gamage along with the staff as well as the staff of the Gemunu Regiment in Galle led by the Commanding Officer will also participate.

The participants will clear up the garbage in the Fort, cut the grass make the place look neat and tidy. A three kilometre stretch along the beach from the Navy camp up to the Lighthouse Hotel has also been earmarked for the cleaning up operation.

To add colour to the event, DSI has planned a Road Show in Galle town with vehicles plying displaying their range of products. A festive mood will prevail in the town with colourful flags and balloons being displayed.
