In an ongoing venture to contribute towards the development of society, DFCC ‘RedsCare,’ a part of the DFCC Bank and DFCC Vardhana Bank (DVB) group, initiated a special community service project this January. Enhancing the learning opportunities for the students at the Kalupahana Vidyalaya in Uvathenna, Belihuloya, the group gathered together to refurbish the school and revamp its facilities.
The DFCC Reds are a welfare society within the group that organises events and opportunities for employees to engage in a diverse range of activities from CSR to recreational events while encouraging the team to interact with each other. As the first project for 2013 the DFCC Reds identified the Kalupahana Vidyalaya, an underdeveloped school in Belihuloya in the Central Province, with 320 students from Grade 1 to Grade 13.
Commenting on the project the DFCC RedsCare Committee, stated: “The DFCC Reds remain committed to supporting the society we live in. Keeping in line with the spirit of the DFCC Reds most of the funds towards each project is generated by personal contributions made by the staff members of DFCC Bank and DFCC Vardhana Bank. We are happy to have given the children of Kalupahana Vidyalaya a reason to smile at the start of their academic year.”
The DFCC group provided the school with a water tank and pipelines to ensure that the school has a steady supply of water to carry out its day to day operations. The team and other staff members in the group volunteered to paint and restore some of the classrooms and the school hall which were in much need of repair. In addition DFCC and DVB also provided books to the school library and offered Vardhana Junior Accounts with a deposit, to students who excelled in the Grade 5 scholarship examination.
The facilities were officially handed over to the school on 18 January under the patronage of the Central Regional Manager of DFCC Bank Sooriyabandara and the Bandarawela Branch Manager Ranjith Dissanayake. Also present at the ceremony was the Director of the Bandarawela Zonal Education Office.
