For over 50 years, Dettol, a leading health and hygiene brand of Reckitt Benckiser has operated with the promise of ‘everyday protection’ to all Sri Lankans. Dettol believes that health depends on the informed choices people make every day within their homes, schools and work places. In order to promote the message of health and hygiene on a national scale, Dettol launched the ‘Mission for Health’ initiative which is aimed at reaching out and partnering with the local community groups in sharing Dettol’s expertise in the area of disinfectant, hygiene and first aid. As a part of the 2014 Mission for Health initiative, Dettol collaborated with the community in supporting the Colombo Vesak Zone held from 14 to 18 May. In commemoration of Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death; there were many Vesak activities which took place around the Island. With a large gathering of people set to celebrate Vesak, Dettol foresaw a genuine need for the provision of first aid and hygiene solutions. Dettol, a leader in promoting health and hygiene in the country partnered with the organisers of the Presidental Dansala which provided refreshments for devotees at the Colombo Vesak Zone 2014. This is the highest rated Dansala in the country which caters to more than 15,000 people per day. In keeping with the promise of everyday protection, Dettol took the responsibility of providing hygiene solutions such as hand washing facilities to the Dansal visitors in order to cleanse their hands before they enjoy the meal. Thus sending the powerful message: ‘Good health begins with good hygiene’. Commenting on this initiative, Reckitt Benckiser Commercial Director Sinclair Cruse stated, “Our ultimate objective is to make Sri Lanka a germ free nation. As a holistic campaign that promotes good health through good hygiene, we see Vesak as the perfect opportunity to reach a wide audience. Vesak, one of the biggest festivals in the country which attracts over thousands of devotees, gives us the opportunity to educate and provide our community with hand wash, first aid and tips on hygiene.” Dettol also took the initiative to provide Free First Aid Solutions with St John Ambulance services. Due to the magnitude of the festival, accidents and medical emergencies are a real concern. As the most trusted first aid brand in the country, Dettol joined hands with St John ambulance service to provide onsite first aid in five locations in Colombo – Gangaramaya Temple Trees Wesak Kalapaya, MTV Wesak Kalapaya, Sambodhi Wesak Kalapaya including Perahara, Bauddhaloka Wesak Kalapaya, Diyawanna Wesak Kalapaya and Dehiwela Pooja Wesak Kalapaya.
