62 students from 11 schools in Muttur received spectacles through Muslim Aid Sri Lanka (MASL) recently. MASL’s partner in the area, Thadayam, assisted in conducting the handing over of the spectacles at St. Anthony’s Maha Vidyalaya, Muttur.
MASL staff, Zonal Education Director Vijayanantha Moorth, Deputy Zonal Educations Director M.M. Jawad and teachers were present at the occasion.
“I would like to thank Muslim Aid for the free eye camp and donation of spectacles to the poor students in this war-affected area. Muslim Aid carried out many relief and development projects to benefit Muttur communities. Once again, Muslim Aid is helping by stepping in to improve the vision of the poorest students who were unable to follow their studies,” said the ISA officer of the Mutur Zonal Education department.
At the end of 2012, after conducting an eye camp, MASL distributed spectacles to 53 students in Horowpathana. Muslim Aid Day 2012 moved to Muttur and Horowpathana on 20 and 21 October 2012 where eye camps were held at Al Hidaya Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Muttur and Muslim Maha Vidyalaya, Horopathana.
A medical team from the Kanthale Base Hospital, Trincomalee assisted MASL to conduct the eye camp effectively on both days. At the eye camp in Muttur, 154 students (belonging to three communities) from 11 schools in the area had their eyesight tested while in Horopathana, 203 students from four schools in the area were tested.
